1. I've had fun reading all the Prayer Buddy reveals this weekend! It's so fun to see who was praying for whom and what they were praying for!
2. I'm still working on the baby quilt. I finally felt good this weekend and made some decent progress on it, but it's still not completed. I've got a timeline to follow since it needs to be done when I head to Minnesota in 11 days!
3. It's been quiet around town this weekend because it was LDS (Latter Day Saints, ie. Mormons) General Conference, which meant everyone was glued to their TV sets Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon. They have these conferences twice a year and the sessions consist of their prophet and other leaders speaking, the Mo-Tab (Mormon Tabernacle Choir) sings, they announce where new temples are being built, etc. I've watched some of it before on TV, and some of what they say just makes me crazy. Some of the theology is not in line with mainstream Christianity and sounds so ridiculous. Other parts of the conference are so scripted and rehearsed.
4. DH and I were too busy enjoying the beautiful weather of the weekend to even want to watch any of conference. I just read the synopses in the paper today and I still was amused by some of the quotes. My favorite was one from Dieter Uchtdorf, a 2nd counselor to the prophet: "the incomprehensible promise of exaltation....within our grasp. And it's God's great desire to help us reach it." Does that sound like working for their salvation? How can Mormons even comprehend grace as we do since they're constantly working for their salvation? Their concept of "grace" doesn't kick in until they've tried everything they can.
5. As a result of conference weekend, it's also been case lot sale time where you can buy cases of almost anything to stock up your food storage. Good Mormons have a years' supply of food and water for when a big natural disaster hits. In our case, people here talk about the "big one" as the next big earthquake that will hit here and devastate thousands. While I agree a 72-hour kit could be helpful, I just can't bring myself to put together even that.
6. Summer had its last hurrah here this weekend with highs in the 80s and lows in the 40s. It's been just beautiful, but I know that's all ending mid-week with a cold front coming in. It looks like we'll finally get our first freeze. Goodbye, garden.
7. There's another research study I want to participate in for first time moms that involves an ultrasound and sample collection each trimester. The only downfall is I have to be registered to deliver at one of the participating hospitals, and that's not really feasible due to driving distance. I was so looking forward to more ultrasounds because I'm having such a hard time waiting and trusting that all is ok.
Hope you all had great weekends! I can't believe it's Monday already tomorrow.

I try to understand the Mormons too even though none of it makes sense to me. I'm sure that's how many people feel about us Catholics! I heard someone on Relevant Radio last week saying that Thomas Aquinas used to have everyone in his classes learn to defend heresies (sp?). That way when debating anti-Catholics, they knew the inherent weakness. Makes me want to learn more about Mormons...Praying for you everyday!
ReplyDeleteI find the Mormon religion somewhat fascinating. I have an aunt and some cousins that are Mormon, and it blows my mind how we use some of the same vocabulary at times, and mean such very different things! That's one religion that I can't study long because it just makes me feel weird.
ReplyDeleteMormons don't really believe in grace. They live and die by the faith without works is dead. Can't get to heaven unless you deserve it kind of a thing.
ReplyDeleteBy the way...my DH and I are coming to SLC in December. Love to meet you!
that's so interesting that the 'results' of the general conference make it to the PAPER! wow, how crazy. i guess not too crazy, considering many comments the pope makes get into the paper, but usually its in a controversial way written by someone of an opposing view, not in the 'rah rah, go us!' way!
ReplyDeleteanyway, made for another world, that is precisely why you should learn about - and pray for - mormons! there are a ton of great sites out there. or just ask C or me :) we know entirely too much!
